Junk Food Review #1: Mountain Dew VooDew

The holidays are just a stone’s throw away and with that comes classic flavors, warm spices, and risks companies take when putting out a variety of fun tastes. What interests me growing up (and obviously still does today) has always been the snack aisle. This time of the year brands put out their best, and unfortunately some of their worst, items of the year. Today, I’m trying the newest of my favorite fall soda series, Mtn Dew VooDEW. Now in its 6th year and going strong!

Mtn Dew VooDEW is more than halfway through a decade and no shows no signs in stopping. The soda was introduced in 2019 and promoted as a fall beverage. Being a mystery flavor the thirst for the answer became sought out by those who were fans of the soda company and those who did a double take at the fridge when checking out their usual items. Mtn Dew set up the game and I am here to play. (Quick side note – growing up a gamer, Mtn Dew has always been a part of my life. Code red 4 life) it’s launch was a success and since we have been provided new flavors to pin.

Before I pop a tab, I like to admire the work these artists put into the can. This year’s design (zero sugar edition) was underwhelming to say the least, but today we’re saying the most. The iconic “Mtn Dew” is outlined with vivid yellow. “Dew” is racecar red. The nutrition label is a light sea green and has royal purple streaks around the can. Random planets and a bat or two were clearly the can’s final touches. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate Halloweens relationship with complementary and unorthodox color schemes, but these colors did not mix well. I would give this design a pity 5/10…It was refreshing to see a nutrition label colored and included in the design.

I only judge books by their covers, it’s time to taste. I took a whiff prior to my first sip and my instant thought was “this smells like Suave Kids Watermelon Wonder 3 in 1 shampoo”. The sweetness of the soda is candy like. My palate was met with the flavor of strawberry, vanilla (or cream), and watermelon. The watermelon resembled Sour Patch Kids Watermelon, the strawberry mixed with vanilla reminds me of my grandma and her love of Creme Savers [editors note: the author knows what he said].

This experience was shared with my two favorite people who are completely different from one another not only from the way they play a role in my life but what their spice rack consists of. One doesn’t have a spice rack. Their answers happened to be quite similar…sugar and Skittles! I mostly don’t agree with them and my guess is that Mtn Dew VooDEW flavor of 2024 is Trolli Strawberry Puffs!!!!! Every year I see these pop up in stores it brings me back to the very start of the series. This year’s VooDEW wasn’t my favorite by any means, but I do believe I nailed the mystery! Nonetheless, I hope Mtn Dew continues with this series. It’s been a tradition of mine for 6 years now and I recommend anyone else into soda to VooDew the same.
